Advance your research with OPAL: Leading-edge omics technology at scale.

The Global Institute for Food Security‘s (GIFS) Omics and Precision Analytics Laboratory (OPAL) is a premier platform for omics technology, providing world-class genomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics services to researchers and organizations across diverse sectors, including those in agri-food and other fields of research and discovery.

Our technology platform includes the latest long-read and high-throughput short-read sequencing technologies. Providing end-to-end support, our team can support you from project design to the first extraction to the delivery of publication-quality bioinformatics data.

Our OPAL platform is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

New at OPAL

In fall of 2023, OPAL became the first service provider in Western Canada to offer sequencing services using PacBio’s latest ultra high-throughput HiFi sequencer, Revio.

This long-read sequencing system significantly increases our sequencing capacity at OPAL, supporting competitive pricing and helping researchers to sequence more samples faster.

The Revio system adds to the new genomics, transcriptomics and bioinformatics services available through OPAL, which also include PacBio’s Kinnex for sequencing RNA with long reads.

How do we accelerate innovation?

The Global Institute for Food Security and its OPAL platform provide researchers with genomic and transcriptomic insights into microbial, plant and animal samples and more.

Our technology, expertise and high-throughput, automated workflows serve public and private researchers in agriculture, health, natural and environmental sciences, as well as other fields of research.
